  • Education and Training
        • Education – Suicide is complicated and tragic, but it is often preventable. We can decrease suicide and suicide attempts by increasing student, staff, and faculty knowledge and adaptive attitudes about help-seeking and reducing the stigma of mental illness, as well as acknowledging the importance of seeking help or treatment. Knowing the warning signs, risk factors, and protective factors can help save lives.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, suicide prevention is described as knowing the risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors surrounding suicide. Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that an individual will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. Protective factors make this less likely to occur. Warning signs indicate an immediate risk of suicide. In collaboration with the OSUSPP and its main pillars of education, advocacy, and outreach, students and staff can self-identify these factors and signs early on in order to cope properly. Ohio State’s Counseling and Consultation Services also offers a variety of assistance all geared towards supporting mental health.
