“Hot Moments” in the Classroom
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
1:30 p.m.–3:00 p.m.
150 Younkin Success Center
Co-sponsored with and facilitated by InterACT
How do I facilitate the charged and tense energy that has occurred in my class because one of the students has made a seemingly unintentional yet discriminatory remark?
The InterACT Theatre Troupe will perform a piece that explores methods for facilitating such charged moments. These moments occur in all types of courses. Often, faculty and TAs respond with silence because they do not want to make the situation worse, or because they do not feel confident that they have the skills for diffusing or facilitating a conversation around this moment. This interactive workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss and actively explore some options with the InterACT characters. Participants will be able to develop strategies for effectively defusing hot moments and turning them into productive learning opportunities.
